Dialectical Behavior Therapy

What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that treats problems and boosts positivity by modifying dysfunctional emotions, behaviors, and thoughts. Unlike traditional psychoanalysis, which probes childhood wounds to get at the root causes of conflict, CBT focuses on solutions, encouraging clients to challenge distorted cognitions and change destructive patterns of behavior.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a form of CBT that helps to decrease negative thinking, change behavioral patterns and improve your quality of life. DBT focuses on learning and implementing coping skills to effectively modulate thinking and behavior.

Clients who engage in DBT therapy focus on building skills in the following areas:

  • Mindfulness Skills
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness
  • Distress Tolerance
  • Emotional Regulation

DBT Treatment has been shown to benefit individuals with the following:

  • Mood Swings
  • Impulsivity
  • Anger Problems
  • Eating Disorders
  • Post-Traumatic Stress
  • Depression
  • Self-Injurious Behavior
  • Anxiety
  • Substance Abuse
  • Poor Self-Esteem
  • Perfectionism

“One Size Fits All” does not work in psychotherapy.

At Nourish Your Mind, we work with DBT in a way that’s personalized to your specific needs. While some clients thrive in a structured DBT-oriented treatment plan, others do best with merging DBT with other therapeutic techniques.

Eating Disorder Treatment

Nourish Your Mind offers evidence-based treatments to help you manage the emotional side of your chronic pain and/or chronic illness.

Are you experiencing any of the following as a result of your chronic pain/illness?:

  • Altered mood
  • Anger
  • Chronic anxiety
  • Confused thinking
  • Decreased self-esteem
  • Family stress
  • Fatigue
  • Fear of injury
  • Financial concerns
  • Irritability
  • Legal issues
  • Reduced sexual interest
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Social isolation
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Work problems

Pain provokes an emotional response in everyone. These are normal feelings when you’re hurting.

Therapy as a Form of Pain Management

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of talk therapy that helps people identify and develop skills to change negative thoughts and behaviors. CBT says that individuals—not outside situations and events—create their own experiences, pain included. And by changing their negative thoughts and behaviors, people can change their awareness of pain and develop better coping skills, even if the actual level of pain stays the same.

Cognitive behavioral therapy helps provide pain relief in a few ways. First, it changes the way people view their pain. CBT can change the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors related to pain, improve coping strategies, and putting the discomfort in a better context.

CBT can also change the physical response in the brain that makes pain worse. Pain causes stress, and stress affects pain control chemicals in the brain, such as norepinephrine and serotonin. CBT reduces the arousal that impacts these chemicals. This, in effect, can make the body’s natural pain relief response more powerful.

Functional Evaluation

The Functional Evaluation helps your Nutritional Therapy Practitioner identify areas of specific weakness in the body and your bio-individual nutrition needs. This hands on evaluation is unique to Nutritional Therapy. It is a non-invasive assessment tool which will be performed on a treatment table within Move Physical Therapy’s clinic. You will be asked to wear comfortable clothing for appointments wherein a functional evaluation will be conducted.

During the Functional Evaluation, your practitioner will palpate with mild to moderate pressure on specific physiological indicator points on your body. For each point, your body will provide important feedback and you will be asked to report a tenderness rating of 0 to 10. Your practitioner will explain to you the physiological indicator of the different points as you move through the evaluation. In addition to physical palpation, several other assessment tools may be used including blood pressure, pulse, taste tests and more.

The Functional Evaluation will provide valuable information about the following health priorities and systems:

  • Digestion
  • Blood Sugar Handling
  • Fatty Acid Balance
  • Tissue Mineral Status
  • Hydration
  • Endocrine
  • Immune & Allergy
  • Cardiovascular
  • Neurological

Your practitioner will perform different sections of the Functional Evaluation tailored to your individual needs based on their review of your Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire, Initial Interview Form and the information you provide during your nutritional therapy session.

Lingual-Neuro Testing

Lingual-Neural Testing (LNT) is a valuable biofeedback tool that enables your Nutritional Therapy Practitioner to determine the usefulness of a nutritional supplement to your body’s specific needs prior to adding it to your nutritional plan.
LNT accesses the body’s innate ability to discriminate between what it needs, and what it does not need, in order to correct a specific problem -a weak organ or a nutritional deficiency, for example. This simple and effective technique makes the difference between a generic nutritional therapy plan and a individualized one.

The phenomenon that is observed with LNT represents:

  • The existences of physiologic indicators, like the heart rate, that reflect specific body functions and their relative health.
  • The powerful connection between the sensory function of the mouth and the brain, or central nervous system (CNS).
  • The ability of the CNS to recognize the value of what is in the mouth (i.e. a nutritional supplement).
  • The tendency of the CNS to immediately change the physiologic indicator in response and proportional to the recognized value of a particular nutrient.

There are three fundamental questions that your Nutritional Therapy Practitioner needs to address with each client to provide effective nutritional therapy:

  • Is there a functional deficiency?
  • What particular nutrient will work for this client?
  • When is the client sufficient?

LNT enables your practitioner, once an assessment is complete, to address these questions by measuring your response to therapy options.

Indicators responsive to LNT are assessed in the following manner:

  • The baseline status of the physiological indicator is determined (i.e. the heart rate is taken) by the practitioner.
  • When the indicator is a reflex point, the practitioner will palpate the point with moderate pressure and you will be asked to rate the level of tenderness on a scale of 0 to 10.
  • A small sample of a considered nutrient is held in the mouth and fully tasted for 20-30 seconds.
The status of the indicator is reassessed in the same manner as before.
  • If improved, the indicator confirms the usefulness of the nutritional supplement in supporting the specific body function that is related to the physiological indicator.
  • If the indicator was not improved, or is worse, you can assume that the nutrient being tested simply wasn’t right for your body’s current needs.

LNT can be an important contribution to a successful health recovery plan. LNT allows you to receive an individualized nutritional therapy plan that reflects both the value of your practitioner’s experience and the innate intelligence of your body.

Individual Adolescent Health Services

Individual sessions allow a more in-depth, one-on-one setting for adolescents. This allows your teen to connect on a deeper level with the materials and receive individualized attention specific to their health issues, stressors and level of nutrition understanding. Individual sessions are great in combination with our 8 Week Strong Teens Group or as a continuation after completion of the group program.
