During the spread of the COVID-19 across our world and locally, we all have big feelings. The future suddenly looks uncertain and we are grappling with the one thing that seems to be constant: change.
How can we weather this storm while hanging on to our inner calm? Here are some suggestions:
- Notice your feelings. Are you afraid, angry, disappointed, apprehensive, skeptical? Allow yourself to feel your feelings, fighting them will only make them stronger. Remember, they are feelings and they are likely to change with the next news alert.
- Anchor yourself on truth. While it is impossible to predict the future, there are some things that remain true. Remind yourself of these things and create a mantra for yourself if you notice your thoughts begin to race. Some mantras might be, I am safe right now, I have enough food right now, I am loved, I am strong. Choose something that is unshakably true and lean into it.
- Be gentle with yourself and those around you. This is a wild ride, so expect to be jostled. Treat yourself like you would treat someone you cherish. Return the rudeness of others with kindness, as often as you can. Understand that this impacts each of us differently, and you have no idea what the next person might be going through.
Let’s take this one day at a time, even one moment at a time. You might not get to choose how this impacts your life, but you do get to choose how you respond.
